He later placed Jefferson. “Jefferson was born April 13, 1743 on a plantation in Shadwell, Virginia” (Read, 1999). He spent his boyhood exploring the wilderness and reading books. He attended boarding school and then College where he studied math, science, literature, philosophy, and law. In April 1767, he became a lawyer and was admitted to the Virginia bar as secretary of the state. There is no question both were brilliant men and even less doubt that they both had “very different notions of the destination of the United States should take” (Harper, 2004), as well as the way to reach these goals.
The two would find themselves on differing sides of many debates and discussions in congress during America’s crucial early life. Both men represented the interests and ideals of certain groups of the American people. Jefferson represented the republican ideals and his followers tended to be made up of artisans, shopkeepers, frontier settlers and owners of small, self-maintained farms in the inner south and west.................
