More than a million East European Jews arrived in the New York City during the period extending from 1880 to 1920 (Karpf, 1938). This influx of Jews changed the life of resident Jews and resulted in the development of many Jewish communities all round the city New York City and off course in every state of America (Binder et al., 1955). Around sixty thousand Jews were living in New York in the year 1880 where as by the end of the year 1914, the population of the Jews in the New York City surpassed one and a half million. Many thousands of these Jewish immigrants first founded homes in this capital city and settled in the lower parts of the east of the city.

In 1884, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) was instituted so as to meet the demands of the settlement of the Jews immigration from Eastern Europe. Among these were the Yiddish speaking Jews who found employment in the trade of needle. However, a few got employment in the city’s tobacco trade. Characteristically, Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe were greatly employed in companies that were owned and operated by the German Jews settled in the city, while there were many others who got engaged in the retail sale business and other markets, for the most part in upstate societies. This was the time when the unionization of trade as well as socialism was originally prospered amongst the Jews. Among the most notable Jewish leaders of the time are Morris Hillquit, Sidney Hillman and David Dubinsky. These leaders were more prominent in making the unionization strong as well as conducting public strikes that became the norm of the economic life in the city.
