Being in the U.S. Army can be dangerous at times, but for those who work in explosive ordnance disposal, the job is always a dangerous one. These soldiers face danger every day to make cities and communities safer after a conflict or war. Mostly what we find are rocket propelled grenades. Usually they are in a fairly hazardous condition where people disturbing them could cause detonations or injury. Other ordnance that has been found includes mortar rounds, artillery rounds, grenades, small arms rounds and this list goes on and on.
Unexploded ordnance is reported to the EOD teams by military and civilian channels, and they go out every day and look at the areas in question from these reports. Of course there are reports that are higher priority than others. Every day we get the reports from our (tactical operations center), and we prioritize them before we head out. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed. There is so much ordnance that I feel it will never be possible to get rid of it all. There are different ways to get rid of the ammunition and unexploded ordinances. Most munitions found to be in good condition will be recycled and given to the army. Other munitions require disposal, Harrington (Pilcher, 111-119).
