Growth of American Prisons
The old British concept of punishment was operative in America for quite long time and it was 1632 that Massachusetts Bay colony built the first wooden building to keep limited number of prisoners. There after a number of prisons came up in most part of America. These prisons were only to house the prisoners. It was 1790 that Wall Nut street prison constructed at the same site of old High Street jail in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania took the initiative to rehabilitate the offenders. Previously the male and female prisoners were kept together. Sex abuses and aggression were common. The Wall Nut prison authorities implemented the rehabilitation activities and separated the women from the men criminals. The cells were made better and tidy and prisoners were made to treat the other prisoners well. The changes continued and reforms of the prisoners were a regular feature. The prisoners were corrected and were made to change their attitudes to be a better part of the society. This was the Pennsylvanian system that encompassed the use of solitary confinement, religious activities, repentance and other forms of the rehabilitation activities. In the mean while the first American state prison was opened in 1797 called new gate but was not involved in any rehabilitation activities. It remained over filled with prisoners not much of the reforms were adopted and was poorly managed. This resulted in to its closure after 31 years. [New gate]

The Reforms Continue
The system of reforms was adopted by the then constructed penitentiaries of Auburn State New York in 1816, Pittsburgh in 1818 and of Philadelphia in 1929.the state of the cells in these penitentiaries were not healthy as they were too small and had poor light. Too ruthless punishments were given for maintaining discipline.....................
