Understanding the Alger Formula in Trung Dung
Introduction
The United States of America has a tradition and culture of rewarding hard work, enterprise and for providing opportunities to individuals from all walks of life and backgrounds. Individuals can succeed, do well and accomplish in the American society through their efforts. The American formula for success is presented by Horatio Alger and can be seen in the life of Trung Dung, who started life as a Vietnamese refugee in America (Alger).
The book "Ragged Dick Or, Street Life in New York With the Boot-Blacks" by Horatio, Jr. Alger tells the story of Ragged Dick who lived in the 1800s and made his life a success in spite of the misfortunes that he had endured. Dick was orphaned and could not receive an education, but he worked hard, treated people with respect and ultimately got a well paid job, thus making a success of himself. The story is an example of the optimism that was prevalent between the depressions that plagued America (Alger).
The "American Dream" by Dan Rather tells the story of more then thirty Americans who succeeded in the United States of America by working on the ideals America was founded on. Amongst the life stories which have been told is the story of Trung Dung who escaped from war torn Vietnam to become a great success in the United States, building a great future for himself as a software entrepreneur with his internet business (Rather).
In this paper, an attempt is made to compare the lives of the two American heroes who tried and achieved in the American society and who lived their lives separated by nearly a century in time but were saved by the same formula (Rather).
