Introduction
The Presidency of the United States of America places an individual as the constitutional head of the government of the most powerful country in the world. This is, therefore, a coveted position and the individual selected for this position has to pass through an arduous process of selection by the electorate. The two candidates who are vying for this position in the upcoming elections are President George W. Bush and Mr. John Kerry. Mr. Bush is the Republican Party candidate while Mr. Kerry is the Democratic Party nominee (Friends of John Kerry, 2005).
Of the two candidates, Mr. Kerry has been described as having “universal appeal”. John Kerry was born on December 11, 1943 at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Colorado. He graduated from Yale and volunteered to serve in Vietnam. His views on return from Vietnam were very much anti-war because he thought that the war had needlessly sacrificed American lives. Mr. Kerry served in Vietnam with distinction and his courage, valor and sacrifice earned him a Silver Star, a Bronze Star with Combat V, and three Purple Hearts. He founded the Vietnam Veterans of America on his return, was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1982 and a Senator in 1984. During his tenure as a Senator, Mr. Kerry has fought long and hard to make the American economy stronger, improve public education, make health care more affordable, and protect the country’s environment(Friends of John Kerry, 2005).
As a presidential candidate, Mr. John Kerry has enjoyed considerable success because it is felt that some new blood is required for the country’s leadership. President George W. Bush has already served two terms in the office and Mr. John Kerry has had a distinguished record of service in the government that deserves recognition...............
