For over a year now, Iraq has been one of the most ardently debated, politicized topics in America. For every exploit or happening, consistently there are two opposite reactions. Supporters of the Bush administration argue for "staying the course," pointing to the recent handover of power as evidence of the success of American involvement. Opponents claim that hundreds of American soldiers have lost their lives in a war with a bogus premise; all but saying American troops should pull out. Although both sides agree on the need for "democracy" in Iraq, they seem more intent on winning rhetorical battles than truly establishing representative government. This professed wish for democracy will never become reality unless Americans place the long-term interests of the Iraqi people above petty political fights. Unfortunately most Americans do not have a thorough understanding of either Iraq or the concept of democracy, leading to ineffective engagement methodologies. Progress in Iraq must not be measured by empty symbols like the recent handover of "sovereignty," but rather by facing Iraq's real challenges so that attainable goals free from tampering by partisan politics can be set.( Cornwell, Rupert)

The most solemn matter in Iraq's biased maturation is the perception of "Islamic democratic state," which is unused in both hypothesis and performs. As a result, Islamic fundamentalism becomes much more striking to a poor and angry population. Americans may have difficulty in understanding why Iraq cannot be established as a secular democracy, since their brand of democracy is generally secular. In development though, American democracy was anything but secular and deeply grounded in Protestant Christianity. The New England colonies were theocracies when they were founded and gradually removed religious requirements on voting over the course of a century. In traditional Islamic culture, there can be no complete separation of religion and politics............
