Philippines are a democratic republic located in Southeast Asia, in the western Pacific Ocean comprises about 7,100 islands. This group of islands extends about 1150 miles from north to south and 700 miles east to west. The Filipino culture is a mix of different cultures put together. 83% of the Filipino population is Roman Catholic, 9% is Protestants, and 5% is Muslims who reside in the southern regions of Mindanao and a few Buddhists. Filipinos have a great respect for their elders.

When a younger person meets an older relative, he/she takes the latter's hand and place it in his/her forehead. This is a sign of respect. Filipinos often raise their eyebrows or nod their heads upward to acknowledge someone, just like saying, hi or hello. Barrio fiesta means a neighborhood celebration to honor the patron saints.

There is a gathering of Filipino culture, like folk dances, arts and music, plays that trace Filipino history and a lot more. Staring is rude and aggressive. Parents often gain control of their child by a silent look without any word spoken. They are happy, generous and their hospitality is limitless. They are outgoing by nature. The Filipinos' concept of self is identified with his/her family, so a Westerner finds them dependent and less assertive. Since childhood, he/she knows that the most important people in his/her life are his/her family.

He/She is expected to submit to his/her parent's advice and decision. Any disgrace he/she commits is the family's disgrace, too. They are fond of giving and attending parties; any event can be an excuse. Be it a birthday, baptism, wedding, engagement, job promotion, or even getting one's first paycheck. Every people all over the world are hospitable in his or her own way, but nothing beats the Filipino way. Filipinos value emotional closeness and security in their family....
