The Cold War, which unfolded soon after the end of World War II, powerfully affected all aspects of American life. U.S. foreign policy in the 1930,s was very influential, and it began to play a major role through out the world in the postwar years. The same sense of mission that had infused America in the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II now impelled most Americans to view themselves as struggling against communism both at home and abroad.

After World War II, the American goal was to exercise economic and political leadership in the world. Toward the end of the 1950 s a wave of anxiety and fear swept over the nation. Thinking back to the decisions the United States made, what were they thinking? They allowed themselves to be vulnerable, thus their judgment and perception of good and bad had been distorted. The Vietnam War is an example of the mistakes that this country has made through out history.

In many cases, the Vietnam War was seen as America s fight for press. Though Americans during the Vietnam War had seen the truth, it was masked by political and economical competition between the world. Vietnam had been under colonial rule by the French Indochina for over 100 years, when they defeated France in July 1954. For seven-and-a-half-years, Communist Vietnamese and the French had battled for control over Vietnam land.

The battle had taken place at Dien Bien Phu, which was in the northwest corner of Vietnam. Realizing how determined the Vietnamese were to gain control of their land, France quickly made the decision to declare peace. On July 20, 1954 at the Geneva Peace Accords in Geneva, Switzerland, France and Vietnam signed an agreement, which allowed Vietnam to determine their political and social structure....
