Essay on Human Factors In Aviation/Aerospace Industry
Since the launch of jet planes and since the time crews are sent for long flights a lot of problems are occurring at an accelerating rate such as sleep disorders, fatigue, changing routines, jet lags etc. As Arendt writes "Circadian rhythm refers to a period of about 24 hrs and the physiological parameters within this period. Without external time clues or with varying clues, such as a pilot would experience flying across time zones, humans will generally take their meals, and feel the need to sleep or awaken, according to a circadian cycle." (Arendt, 1997)
Almost everyone who has traveled to any part of the world has experienced jet lag. The distress associated with jet lag results when the body's internal clock, or circadian rhythm, becomes desynchronized with the external time zone. (Knutsson, 2003) The symptoms of jet lag includes insomnia, sleepiness, impaired performance, diminished alertness, irritability, stomach problems and depressed mood.(Waterhouse et al 2005)....
