Air travel has become an accepted fact of life in the world today and thousands of individuals use air transportation to travel over continents in relative safety and comfort. The International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO, which is a body of the United Nations makes possible, the necessary cooperation between the civil aviation organizations of different countries.

National and international standards related to aviation, aviation safety and passengers makes air travel one of the safest means of transport available, despite the crashes that do occur from time to time. In the unfortunate event of an aircraft accident, the national investigative body of the country in whose territory the accident occurred is responsible for providing assistance to the victims and presenting a report of investigation into the accident. The national investigation may be assisted by international investigators from the ICAO or investigators from other countries and sources.

The main purpose of an aircraft accident investigation is to determine what went wrong and this can assist in gaining the knowledge required for future improvements. Other nations have similar bodies that are responsible for conducting investigations into aviation related accidents (ICAO, 2002).
