Essay on Senator Jesse Helms views on Civil Rights
(From 1960s to 1975)
Helms began his vocation as a radio spokesperson for separation, anticommunism and devout fundamentalism, and never moved far from this poisonous biased alliance. Born in Monroe, North Carolina in 1921, he acknowledged some preliminary education in radio in the armed forces throughout World War II and returned to capture a position at a radio station in the state capital, Raleigh. In 1950 he worked as a canvasser for chauvinistic Democratic Senate candidate Willis Smith, whose campaign included a doctored photo of the incumbent’s wife dancing with a black man. (Helms writer Ernest Furgurson reports the claim that Helms individually cut up the photos and combined them.) Helms went to Washington as Smith’s staff administrative assistant, then returned to North Carolina two years later as executive director of the state’s banking association, where he spent seven years helping enrich the financial institutions that browbeaten the under pressure farmers and small businessmen Helms would later maintain to characterize. The Republican Party by no means recognized absolute power in North Carolina, with conventional Democrats retaining be in command of the state legislature and the governorship for most of Helms’ 30 years in the Senate.
