The Life and Adventures of Henry Bibb is a narration of himself revealing his tragic slavery life. This is a summary which presenting a picture of the conditions through which the slaves in South had undergone. They had no right of education, wore tattered clothes, their bodies hardly covered, provided with very less food, extreme punishments, no freedom, and such other torturous conditions.

Henry Bibb was a son of a slave mother and was sold at an early age, when he was not even properly aware of the concept of slavery. He has to face all the tough conditions lashed by the whites as their masters.

He has also mentioned in his book that slaves are also human beings, but are distinguished from the others on the color basis. Henry did not want to live the life of a slave because the thought of dieing as a slave haunted him. He wanted to gain freedom and so wanted to flee to Canada.

Slavery in the south played a dominating and critical role in much of Southern life. In the struggle for control in America, slavery was the South’s stronghold and the hidden motive behind many political actions and economic factors.

In the nineteenth century slavery drastically expanded in the South, and so was a major part of the economic system of the South, and it increasingly dominated southern politics and the social lives of both blacks and whites. 

About one-fourth of the white population of the South owned slaves, and seventy-five percent of those who did owe slaves still supported the concept of slavery. If the social aspect of the 1830’s and 1840’s is observed, the whites with lower income levels were associated wit the rich whites. The black slaves were treated as low in the society and were deprived of the right of being treated with equality....
