Essay on Role of alcohol and drugs in Edgar Allan Poe's life
Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most renowned American narrators, who inscribed various metaphors of periodic unconsciousness, mystification, and fear. These signs have been accredited to alcohol or drug abuse. For numerous years and lots of different causes both before and after his death Edgar Allan Poe has been typified as an alcoholic. There were continuous stories and beliefs relating his drinking from all types of sources surrounding Poe.
One glass of wine went to his head; very little more than that made him drunk. Alcohol was a dangerous stimulant for him- one that was eventually to bring about his ruin (Doren Philip 1957).
Poe was a dipsomaniac, not an alcoholic. Alcohol was a drug that worked impulsively on him. He strived lots of times to give up but was customarily drawn back by several new stresses upon his system. He drank over time of arousing havoc, when exhilaration or catastrophes overtook him. In his own words he drank, not for contentment, but to run away from afflicting memoirs, unbearable solitude, a fear of some eccentric impending doom. His fears drove him to seek relieve in drink; it was not drinking or drug captivating that taking on the horrors.
Moreover, in this depiction of miserable drunks, Poe might in fact be describing himself after an indulgence while he was usually drug out of the grooves. In any view, he uses alcohol for the reason that it is overwhelming and disparaging. Very rarely did he have alcohol implicated if it was not destructive. These characters imitate his incapability to take pleasure from the drug like most people and his seeing it as a mechanism of devastation.
Poe's works imitates what he thought regarding the immorality of drinking. Liquor played a foremost role in The Black Cat and The Cask of Amontillado.....
