Essay on The effects of Henry Ford on our Culture
Henry Ford is mostly remembered for the Model T, mass production and the five-dollar day, which doubled his worker’s pay. But he should equally be remembered for his extensive soybean experimentation and research into plastics – his last great achievement and the work that delighted him most.
Henry Ford was one of the most important and influential inventors and businessmen in the short history of America. He revolutionized the business world and he changed forever the efficiency of factories around the world (Black, 2000). One of the reasons that Henry Ford can be considered such an important man is that his ideas and concepts are still used today.
Henry Ford was one of America’s leaders in the car manufacturing industry he pioneered the beginning of the automotive industry. Beginning as early as 1896, Henry Ford had established his first automobile in a brick garage behind his house on Bagley Avenue in Detroit. He had assembled one of the first successful automotive runs on pure gasoline.
Ford's thinking was, "The man who put in the bolt does not put on the nut; the man who puts on the nut does not tighten it." Ford called this idea, "The Assembly Line." Ford's assembly line helped to increase production to twice what it was before. Thanks to the assembly line Ford was able to cut production time by nearly seventy-five percent and churn out a car every ninety-three minutes (Douglas, 2003). At the time this was unheard of. One of the only problems with this was not as many people were needed as before. The labor force was drastically reduced from 14,336 to 12880 workers (Russ, 2002). Because of this the work that these workers performed was very demanding. For every thousand workers hired only about a hundred would stay. Overall the assembly line was probably Ford's greatest contributions to society. It revolutionized the way that things are manufactured....
