Robert Lee Frost (1874-1963) was one of America's leading 20th-century poets and a four-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize. He was born in San Francisco, California and was the son of William Prescott Frost, Jr., of New Hampshire and Isabelle Moodie of Scotland (Robert Frost, Encarta). He was named after Robert E. Lee, the commander of the Confederate armies during the American Civil War of 1861 to 1865 (Robert Frost, Encarta).

After his father's death in 1885, when young Frost was 11, the family left California and settled in Massachusetts. There he attended high school and began writing poetries. He then attended Dartmouth College briefly but withdrew during his first year and went to work. In 1894 he sold "My Butterfly: An Elegy" to The Independent, a New York literary journal and a year later he married Elinor White, with whom he had shared valedictorian honors at Lawrence (Mass.) High School. From 1897 to 1899 he attended Harvard College as a special student but left without a degree (bibliography of Robert Frost, American Poems). Over the next ten years he wrote (but rarely published) poems, operated a farm in Derry, New Hampshire, and supplemented his income by teaching at Derry's Pinkerton Academy.

Frost continued writing poetry, but he was unsuccessful at publishing his work. Thus, for seeking better literary opportunities, he sold the farm and used the proceeds to take his family to England where he could devote himself entirely to writing in 1912. His efforts to establish himself and his work were almost immediately successful and his book of poems “A Boy's Will” was accepted by a London publisher and brought out in 1913 followed a year later by North of Boston as his second collection. Thus, his work established him as a renowned author.....
