born on November 14, 1954, is now the 66th United States Secretary of State, and by many ways is the second in administration of President George W. Bush. She was elected to her post by replacing Colin Powell on January 26, 2005.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Rice is a bachelor from the University of Denver, a master from Notre Dame and holds a doctorate degree from the University of Denver’s Graduate School of International Studies.
In an article in the New Yorker, Nicholas Leman, the dean of the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University, stated that Birmingham was home to Gastons, who were a one notably rich black family. They were in the insurance business. The next rich family was of Alma Powell, wife of Colin Powell. Both the families had friendly ties. Rice was barely eight when her schoolmate Denise McNair was brutally killed in the bombing of primarily Black American Sixteenth Street Baptist Church by the white supremacists. Dr. Rice went through a trauma at a very tender age and states that growing up with extreme racial segregation taught her the determination against adversity, and the persevarance and rather her need to be twice as good as the whites or majorites.
