Essay on Gladesmen: Gator Hunters, Moonshiners, and Skiffers
Throughout history, the increasing population and increased national and international visibility of Florida have sparked an enormous deal of accepted significance in the state's past, present, and predictable future. But the literature on Florida's distinguishing inheritance and temperament has not kept pace with the state's improved status. This series is intended to cure those circumstances by providing a reachable and striking arrangement for the publication of Florida-related books, together with scholarly books, works of synthesis, cautiously selected works of accepted history, accounts, and anthologies. At the same time as the series will feature books of chronological interest, the editors support authors researching Florida's environment, politics, literature, and well-liked or material culture to present projects for contemplation.
Glen Simmons has lived in the south Florida Everglades since his birth in 1916 in Homestead. In 1995 he was awarded a State of Florida Heritage Award for his sole involvement in Florida's history and folk culture. He has established and trained glades skiff building for the Florida Department of State, Bureau of Folklife, and the South Florida Historical Society; his boats are on everlasting exhibit at the Florida Folklife Museum in White Springs, Florida, and at the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, Miami.
Laura Ogden, also born in Homestead and a life-long friend of Glen Simmons, is consulting anthropologist for the Governor's Commission for a Sustainable South Florida. She has worked for the State of Florida Bureau of Folklife and has written about conventional Florida folk culture; she also has published articles in both anthropology and history journals.
This book is a captivating study of fishing, hunting, and working in the Florida Everglades. The majority of the actions that are described are set in the 1930s. Nearly all of the book consists of stories and descriptions of live from Glen Simmons, a boat builder who has lived in the Everglades region all his life.....
