Essay on Birth of Techno-Thrill
Thomas L. Clancy, Jr. was born on 12 April 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland. Tom graduated from Loyola High School, Towson, MD, with the class of 1965. He majored in English at Baltimore's Loyola College, and worked as an insurance broker in Maryland. During college, he dreamed of writing a novel, and his dream came true in 1984 when his first novel, The Hunt for Red October, was published. He has since become one of the most famous authors of our times. A successful career in insurance allowed him to pursue his original ambition of writing and give birth to "techno-thrill genre".
As a child, Tom Clancy loved to play with military toys and became interested in technology, especially as it applied to outer space. Tom always wanted to join military but due to his bad eye sight he was unable to accomplish it. Since Tom was really into military stuff and no way he was going back to anything else, so he decided to write books about war and military stories. He had a strong interest in writing a suspense novel. These situations helped him to give birth to "techno-thrill genre".
Another contributing factor to Clancy's "techno-thrill genre" is a love for technology that goes beyond the aesthetic; Tom
Clancy truly understands it and embraces the challenge of constantly learning about it. As an educated concerned observer, though, the author never loses sight of what the proliferation of technology truly means to mankind, and the fact that in the wrong hands it can be as much of a detriment to this world as any hallow clad politician might have it be our savior.
When writing a successful, modern techno-thriller the author must learn to give himself to the historical facts, be they social, military, political, or scientific - for it is the factual truth that acts as the foundation for any truly believable fiction....
