Essay on The Necklace

Guy de Maupassant's "The Necklace" is an irony inscribed in 1884. The tale was written during a time when there were extremely discrete societal classes mainly determined by one's birth.  It is on the subject of a woman who was really conscious with her position in the middle class.  Though she discerns she can not run away of her class, she declines to admit it benevolently.

“It is through Matilde that Maupassant builds up the story's irony.  This is reflected through Matilde's daydreaming, which simply exacerbates their economic position, and lastly, their redundant give up”. (Henry, 1888)

Mathilde’s actions ironically imitate her discernments of paucity. The necklace symbolizes the incapability of Mathilde and those she endeavors to impress to tell the divergence between what is factual and what is forged. Ironically, it is her fault to realize this that reflects her pride and causes her to be led down a path of even more poverty. As Mathilde was lying and did not tell Mrs. Forestier that she lost her necklace, she added to her major demise.

The irony in “The Necklace” is that Mathilde ineffectively seeks out to seem wealthy even though what she thinks looks affluent in fact becomes false.  Mathilde continually longs for wealth all through the story.  In spite of this, she weds a clerk at the Ministry of Public Instruction even then she comprehends that all of the wealthy men thinks her to be stunning regardless of her class.  Later than being invites to a ball, Mathilde is not contented until she is capable to buy a new dress so that she can appear to be rich.

Ironically for the party, she borrows an artificial fake necklace from a well-off friend, Mme. Forestier. Here, it appears as if Mathilde is more anxious with appearing to be rich than Mme. Forestier is.  Though, she thinks the necklace is an excellent necklace of diamonds.....
