Essay on How Babies are made
The book “How babies are made”, is an interesting book by the way it has displayed many different animals with the use of clever illustrations. The topic of Child Birth can be a difficult topic to teach young children, so I do not find it surprising that the author used simple animals and illustrations to try to make it easier for the parents to relate the animals to the children. I did find some of the illustrations a bit confusing, and that is coming from a college student taking a child development class. Overall for the level of difficulty associated with the topic of child birth, I believe that the book does make a sufficient point to illustrate the nature of child birth, yet some of the illustrations can be confusing so keep that in mind.
The book is so utterly limited to simple biology (with illustrations in the form of very-well-executed paper cut-outs and drawings) -- to the extent that the act of human sexual intercourse is covered by a blanket -- there is plenty of room for parents to instill their own values about sexuality, masturbation, birth control and sexually-transmitted diseases, at a much, much later time as deemed appropriate by the parents (Ivanoy, Brougher, 1998).
The illustrations make a lot of sense. It starts from flowers, to chickens, to dogs and then finally humans. It gives a quick sequence of the making of baby animals and human babies. It is not technical and very direct. Most children would understand this because it is pictures and visual.
The only criticism I have of this book is that it presumes that every child is conceived by a mother and a father engaging in traditional sexual intercourse. For the child conceived by IVF or GIFT, or by artificial insemination, the book doesn't answer any questions......
