Essay on The Character of Monsieur Meursault in Albert Camus's The Stranger
Albert Camus’s novel was written in the era when Existentialist movement was at its peak that is why the main character of the novel seems detached and apathetic, which were the two of the main aspects of existentialism.
Meursault, is a character created to intend his readers to relate to, because the character created is very close to realistic situations. The character of Meursault keeps on changing at the different parts and situations of the novel keeping the reader enthusiast with the emotional changes in the character depicted beautifully. Although the emotions showed in the novel of the character are the character of the Meursault very well ports negative but them. Especially at some occasions as the death of his mother when his reaction is so emotion less and brutal that rather than expressing any grief at the death of his mother he is concerned about the conformation of the date of the death. “Maman died today. Or yesterday maybe, I don’t know” (Camus 3). This wrathfulness and unemotional attitude of the character depicted in the novel multifaceted from positive perspective the character seems bold and brave enough to face the cruel realities of life. On the other hand the negative aspect of the character is that it is so emotionless and brutal that he does not feel wrath at the death of his mother.
The character seems very indifferent towards the other characters and towards life. He is so composed and stiff in his self that he does not want to have close and intimate relations with other characters of the novel. He has a closed personality strong enough to face all the difficulties of life alone and does not want to have any emotional help from others. Because these things are needed for the events of grief and sorrow.......
