Essay on The Da Vinci Code

The Da Vinci Code is a riveting murder mystery and a work of great imagination. However the book is tragically flawed. Its description of many historical religious events, documents, and personalities are simply untrue. The tragedy of this book is that it could have been edited to be much more accurate historically without adversely affecting its popularity.

The author

Dan Brown (born June 22, 1964 in Exeter, New Hampshire) is an American author of thriller fiction. His novels include:
Digital Fortress (1997)
Angels and Demons (2000)
Deception Point (2001)
The Da Vinci Code (2003)

He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, where his father was a mathematics teacher, then matriculated to Amherst College, where he was a member of Psi Upsilon Fraternity, graduating in 1986.

Prior to becoming a full-time writer, he taught English at Phillips Exeter and at Lincoln Akerman School in Hampton Falls. He currently lives in New England. Blythe, his wife, is an art historian and painter and her influence is evident in his best-selling novel, The Da Vinci Code. (Web ,1)

The DaVinci Code” has sold approximately 36 million copies in print and has been translated into 44 languages. Combining the detective, thriller and conspiracy theory genres, the novel has helped generate popular interest in certain theories concerning the Holy Grail legend and the role of Mary Magdalene in the history of Christianity — theories that Christians typically consider heretical and that have been criticized as historically inaccurate.

It is a sequel to Brown's 2000 novel Angels and Demons, again featuring the character Robert Langdon. In November 2004, Random House published a "Special Illustrated Edition", with 160 illustrations interspersed with the text.

The book claims that the Catholic Church has been involved in a conspiracy to cover up the true story of Jesus. This implies that the Vatican consciously knows it is living a lie, but does so to keep itself in power...........
