Essay on Motivating Teams
Team Structure
Within each team one can define clear roles. Most of them are of course related to the traditional positions. First is role clarity, every player knows what to do in every situation (this is sometimes difficult to define so give your players a sort of minimum requirements list). Secondly is the acceptance of the role. Each player should feel comfortable in the position he is playing. Last is the performance of the player in the role. So without interfering or worrying about the others, the team performance as a whole is lifted if the focus on personal responsibilities is clear.
Adapting Rewards to Today's Teams
The key, of course, is to recognize that the old individual measurement and reward process may no longer be suitable for the current work environment. If rewards are part of a motivation system, this system must be modified to suit the current environment and to promote the desired results.
Maintaining Cohesiveness
With a team of strong personalities, harmony sometimes seems impossible. But one can control this by setting goals and rewards for everyone to reach their best performance. One need to indicate clearly that competition within the group should never be a detriment to achieving the team’s overall goals.
Which three characteristics would be the most important to you as a team player?
Growth
Growth is the product that people expect to receive for taking on challenge and risk. Team and individuals must be encouraged to take risks to allow for team and individual growth (Francis & Young. 1979). A quality team can examine each other’s errors and success, determine each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and provide effective feedback for team and individual improvement with no hint of malice. (Francis & Young. 1979) Teams must practice continuous improvement to establish growth. (Reid, 1998)............
