Canada's film industry struggles for success and seeks its own spotlight in the shadow of Hollywood. Canadian films account for just one percent of box office totals in Canada. A new campaign seeks to raise that to at least five percent. According to the data and research in Profile 2004, total production spending in the Canadian film and television production industry rose by 4 percent to $4.93 billion in 2002/03. This growth was fueled by an 8 percent rise in foreign location production and a 4 percent increase in broadcaster in-house production. While these sectors experienced growth, independently produced Canadian content, (i.e., production certified by the Canadian Audio-visual Certification Office) experienced no growth in 2002/03.
One of the problems faced by the Canadian film industry is that English-language feature films have not captured a significant share of the box office in their linguistic market. This is due to the significant competition in the English-language feature film sector fuelled by films emanating from large foreign studio systems. So in order to bring improvements the proper project development is vital to help ensure the success of feature films in the marketplace and more funds should be made available to support this indigenous project development process.
As we know that in every project the government role is essential so government should also form the Film Industry Advisory Committee comprised of industry representatives. The work of this committee should be to provide the ministry with information concerning the industry-related matters on a regular and ongoing basis. So in this way the government will be assured and updated of the issues facing the industry and can provide the Canadian film industry with possible tax relieves, project financing and support.
