Essay on Homeless Teens

Homelessness is becoming a growing issue every year with the teenage population. The number of teens living on the streets is getting larger and larger. But why are teens leaving their homes? A majority of teens experience violence within their own house or community. Some believe a life on the street is better than a life where they live. Being homeless results in physical and emotional problems for everyone, and each day faces new problems and hardships for teens to live through. Teen homelessness has become a major issue and the problem isn't being solved.

Factors That Cause Teens to Leave Their Houses:

Most teens that come to the streets do so because they have no choice. Screaming, abuse, poverty, addiction, lack of freedom--all these factors may cause a teen to seek solace at a shelter or hit the streets. Some adolescents have no choice but to leave their homes because of poverty, while some would rather live on the street than deal with intolerable conditions. The National Coalition for the Homeless reports that 39 percent of the homeless are fewer than 18. Homeless teens leave (or are kicked out of) their homes because of such problems as violence, sexual abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, poverty, lack of space, absence of privacy and parental neglect.

A question that is frequently asked is why are teens running away from home? In a recent survey "Nearly 1/3 of all children (31%) have witnessed domestic violence, 1/5 of school-aged children (20%) have witnessed violence in their community, and one in ten school-aged children (10%) have been threatened or hurt by a weapon . . ." (Nunez, 2002)....
