Abstract
Witchcraft is the practice of the supernatural or sorcery by those outside the sacred mainstream of the social order; the term is used in unusual ways in a variety of historical and social contexts. A lot of people participating in the modern revitalization of witchcraft, recognized as the neopagan renewal, classify themselves as benevolent witches. Consequently, the practice of witchcraft should not be linked with wickedness or the infliction of harm, nor with diabolism (the invocation of Devils). Additionally, a lot of accusations of malicious witchcraft—especially in some primal societies and in early modern Europe and North America—have been unfounded and have sprung from irrational fears and social anxieties.
In the early Christian centuries, the church was comparatively tolerant of magical practices. Those who were proved to have occupied in witchcraft were required just to do self-punishment. Although in the late Middle Ages (13th century to 14th century) opposition to alleged witchcraft hardened as a result of the mounting faith that all magic and miracles that did not come decidedly from God came from the Devil and were as a result manifestations of evil. Those who practiced straightforward sorcery, such as village wise women, were more and more regarded as practitioners of diabolical witchcraft.
