Essay on Google Inc

Introduction

More frequently, however, students and general Internet users use search engines and online databases as a tool to locate data for such things as essay projects, work reports, the best price for a book or car, government information…the list is almost as extensive as the number of users logged on at any one time.

Because of the lack of centralized structure on the Internet, the only way to find pages and files is to follow links to other pages and files that can then be indexed. To do this effectively would require automation, and in 1993 a physics student at MIT, Mathew Gray, created the first recognized Web ‘robot’, an autonomous agent that would follow links. This first robot, the ‘World Wide Web Wanderer’, was limited to measuring the growth of the Web, simply reporting on the existence of links and pages without indexing them.

Search engines, therefore, have three important components: the web crawler, which is used to locate pages; an indexing tool to compile a database of search terms based on files located by the crawler; and a query processor, used to match terms entered by a visitor against the database stored on the server. Because of the potential difficulties at each stage—trawling the Web for files is an expensive process, requiring fast computers capable of keeping track of a vastly expanding net, crawlers rely on links to find pages, and users have different expectations and experience of using such engines—no single search engine can ever hope to cover every search. For this reason, metasearch engines have started to become popular; these are sites that send queries to multiple search engines and directories simultaneously.
