Essay on Abbott Laboratories
Fortune 500 is a list of the 500 largest companies in the United States, compiled and published annually by Fortune, a financial magazine. The Fortune 500 originated as the Fortune Industrial 500, an annual list of the top-ranking U.S. industrial companies, first published in 1955. In 1956 Fortune started compiling a separate list of nonindustrial companies, and by 1983 this list had grown to 500 companies and became known as the Fortune Service 500. By the 1990s, a large number of industrial companies received much of their revenues from service businesses, such as financial services. Determining whether a firm was an industrial firm or a service firm grew more difficult, so in 1995 the magazine combined the two lists into one. Companies on the Fortune 500 are ranked according to total revenues for the previous year. The Fortune 500 also shows the yearly performance of the companies by 11 other indexes, including profits, assets, growth in earnings, and ten-year returns to investors.
