Scott Lee Peterson is a former agriculture chemical salesman convicted in a high-profile California double murder case. On December 23 or 24, 2002, Peterson is believed to have murdered his wife, Laci, while she was eight months pregnant with their unborn child, who was to be named Conner. The trial, the People of the State of California vs. Scott Peterson, followed closely by the media, started in June 2004. The lead prosecutor was Rick Distaso, and the attorney leading Peterson's defense was Mark Geragos.
Defense attorney Mark Geragos said in a news conference after the verdict that he was "very disappointed." But Peterson's lawyers presented an odd and surprisingly unvigorous defense. They promised much in the opening arguments but delivered little against what was mainly circumstantial evidence from the prosecution that left jurors to conclude that Peterson was guilty based on his actions before and after his wife was reported missing. During the penalty phase, Geragos called about 40 witnesses over seven days. The prosecution put on a short but emotional case in the penalty phase, calling just four witnesses. Laci's mother, Sharon Rocha, told jurors, "Every morning when I get up I cry." She would later rise out of her seat and scream at Scott, who was seated impassively at the defense table: "Divorce was always an option. Not murder!"
Another approach put forward by the Peterson’s defence are the satinists. The legal team for Peterson reportedly plans to put forth the theory that Laci was kidnapped and killed in some sort of Satanic ritual as a sacrifice....
