Red Hat had been set up by Marc Ewing in 1993. "I started Red Hat to produce a development tool I thought the world needed," he said in 1996. "Linux was just becoming available, and I used [it] as my development platform. However, I soon found that I was spending more time managing my Linux box than I was developing my software, and I concluded that what the world really needed was a good Linux distribution; at the time there was only SLS." (Glyn Moody, 2001).
Ewing had definite ideas about what was lacking in current distributions. "It was clear that Linux needed a lot of help in the areas of installation, configuration, and package management," he explained. "Until Red Hat, there really was no such thing as upgrading to a new Linux distribution; you had to reinstall. That was a huge drawback. It was also difficult to incrementally upgrade your machine. You either got the sources and configured and rebuilt them yourself"—some thing only real hackers would want to do—"or you took a chance with prebuilt binaries. Package management is what solves these problems." (Amanda Andress, 2003).
What is interesting about these remarks is that Ewing was aiming to provide solutions to user problems. From the start, he was concentrating on the new market of less technically able users. As he explained, "Linux is becoming so popular that a lot of people with no Unix experience are using it, and they are generally not trained in the arcane Unix administration skills—nor should they have to be in our opinion." (Amanda Andress, 2003).
This was an important development because it showed how commerce was starting to move GNU/Linux into areas that Linus and his kernel hackers, for example, could not address directly. This was not a question of programming, but packaging, which new companies like Red Hat were ideally placed to address.....
