To achieve efficiency on all three fronts, Wal-Mart should set up an information system using all the technological possibilities provided by the Internet.
Inventory Logistics Efficiency in the supply chain lowering inventories is one of the quickest ways to substantially decrease working capital needs. Performance measures such as the old standby of ROA (Return-on-assets), and the newer EVA (Economic Value Added) as well as other measures which measure capital use efficiency have become more and more common organizational "drivers". In fact, many an executive's bonus is often, at least in part, dependent on how efficient capital is used (Douglas, 2004).
Logistics Efficiency Loads devised manually will not be optimized. To get an idea of the complexity of routing/scheduling problems, Wal-Mart should consider the magnitude of intricacy:
- Varying delivery days, volumes and times and number of customers
- Discrete product cube, weight and density, Delivery restrictions, ordinances, low overpasses and tunnels
- Deliveries over wide geographic areas
- Specialized equipment requirements like trailers with side doors, air ride etc
New concepts in logistic management basically make use of application systems. Not only can this make processes within an enterprise automatic, it can also add in control structures to ensure processes are handled without error (Douglas, 2004). New logistic management software is in general cross-platform, breaking the limits between different application systems. This allows coordination between different systems, no matter how complex the processes are. Besides process management, these softwares have macros to organize information for the enterprises and allow tasks to be performed at the specific times. They can greatly reduce management costs.
I feel that Wal-Mart needs to pay close attention to all cost and take in to consideration the effects....
