Greenpeace is an environmental-activist group, to call for a "global structure" to fight global warming. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development stopped short of calling on governments to take on the pending Kyoto global-warming agreement, which the Bush administration and many of the largest U.S. corporations have contrasting as too destructive. Greenpeace's assignment is to expose worldwide environmental problems and their causes, and potential solutions. This will in nature bring Greenpeace into conflict with those causing the problems, which is often, but not at all times, industry. Greenpeace attacks not the free market financial system, but businesses externalizing ecological costs to boost their own profits, The old collective command economies also caused environmental damage by their careless externalization of costs. It is not the nature of the economy, but the nature of the damage which motivates campaigners. Greenpeace engages with business through a quarterly publication, Greenpeace Business, and seminars and conferences. Speakers come from businesses, which are ahead of the game in reducing their environmental impact and grasping the new business opportunities that a low-carbon, clean-technology world brings.
