Introduction
The Tennessee Valley Authority, TVA, is the largest wholesale supplier of electricity in the United States of America. This public organization started off as a result of an initiative by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt who needed novel solutions to lift the nation out of the Great Depression. He wanted to judiciously invest public funds in order to provide employment and development for the nation. President Roosevelt asked the Congress to create “a corporation clothed with the power of government but possessed of the flexibility and initiative of a private enterprise.”
This desire was instrumental in the passage of the TVA Act, which was passed on May 18, 1933. Since its inception, the TVA has been involved in electricity generation, navigation and flood control, bringing improved agricultural methods to the farmers in Tennessee valley, malaria prevention, reforestation, control of forest fires and improving the habitat for wildlife and humans in general. The Federal government acts as the owner of share equity and the debt owned by private institutions as well as individuals (Allrefer.com).
The TVA has had to face a long history full of challenges, but in spite of this, the authority has been instrumental in bringing progress to the Tennessee valley and improving the lives of its people. There have been allegations that the TVA has had a long history of inefficient management, poor forecasting and at times, a real threat of bankruptcy. However, it should be realized that the TVA is not a private organization which is run for profit, but a Federal government initiative that is in place to bring progress and prosperity to the people and the nation. Hence, the TVA has to take risks and initiatives which the private sector will not. The TVA has been instrumental in improving the conditions of the areas in which it operates and much has changed since 1933....
