CLANDESTINE LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS
Substances including methamphetamine (speed), PCP, LSD, and "designer drugs" are manufactured in clandestine drug laboratories. These laboratories may be in the trunk of someone's car, in a hotel or motel room, in a rented apartment in the city, or in a remote farmhouse.
The people involved in the manufacture of these drugs are usually called "chemists" and may or may not have some scientific background. Cultivated drugs such as cocaine are also processed in laboratories, some of which are in the United States and others of which are in cocaine producing/processing countries.
The requirements of chemicals, glassware, water, and electricity vary from drug to drug. California has been the state with the highest number of drug laboratories (with approximately 225 labs discovered in 1985 as opposed to fewer than 40 in five other states which reported drug laboratories).
Clandestine laboratory investigations can be either reactive or proactive. In a reactive investigation, information is received about noxious odors or suspicious activity at a particular location.
The site is quietly surveilled to determine whether it is a drug lab. If the assessment of the situation reaches a positive conclusion about a lab, then an entry team and environmental specialists are assembled to seize the lab and arrest the violators (RCMP, 2001).
Because of the danger of the chemicals used in clandestine labs and the propensity of the lab chemists to "boobytrap" lab entrances, strict safety protocols are followed, including use of protective clothing and breathing apparatus....
