The Coca Cola Beverages was established in 1886. Ironically, the birth of Coke was a result of an experiment to cure headaches. Coca Cola was first introduced in India in the 60s. It took the nation by storm and as expected, handicapped the other companies’ sales. High political games made the company do a forced exit from the Indian market in 1977. However, Coke was reintroduced to India in 1993.
Sales of soft-drinks have gone down by 30-40 per cent over the past week. Now the cola scare has hit the country. Whatever may be the ultimate verdict on the extent of pesticide residue in soft-drinks, the two major soft drink manufacturers are already feeling the pinch.
Is it just a media hype that will blow over and soon it will be business as usual? One may recall the earlier controversy over pesticide residues in bottled mineral water. There was a huge scare but then very few really know what follow-up steps were taken by the regulatory authorities to remedy the situation (Rajnev, 20002).
These controversies should serve as a wake-up call to the health and safety hazards enveloping us from all sides. A look at some of the larger issues beyond the immediate cola controversy, but first, let us understand the immediate facts.
The controversies surrounding the mineral water and the soft-drinks were both triggered by the laboratory findings by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), a Delhi-based NGO.
The Health Ministry or the government regulator or testing authorities had no role here.
The safety of drinking water should be a bigger concern than that of soft-drinks. Even then, the business of manufacturing spurious bottled water has continued to mushroom. According to reports, some of the bottlers even use ISI certificate without any authorization. People are taking about two possible explanations: One, the groundwater in India is contaminated because of excessive use of pesticides by farmers. That gets into bottled colas....
