How Effective Change Process Evolve
ssuming consistency between what people hear and what they see and feel, then for effective change to occur, there must be motivation on two levels. The group (business unit, corporation, organization, business team) and the individual must be motivated to change. The collective behavior of the group changes only as a result of change in individual behaviors of those in the group.
An effective change process requires congruency on three levels:
- Content: What is being said to people as a group and to individuals?
- Process: What is being seen with regard to the implementation for individuals and at an organizational level? Do those making the case for change have integrity?
- Climate: How does it make people feel and how do they sense the organization feels because of the change efforts?
For change to be effective there must be congruity in the content, process and climate of the company for the individual and the group (Varun, 1998). It is a complex process and these areas highlight the complexity. At the group level, an organization can have a compelling vision, a process that matches with the vision and a great climate. But at the individual level, if the person sees little value in the vision (not just monetary), or the process is being managed in such a way as to create a value conflict with that individual, then change will not be effective.
For individual behaviors to change there must be a compelling reason for the group to change. These reasons must be valuable and exciting to the group. There must also be motivation on the individual level for change to occur. Individual change is sometimes inhibited by fear (I might fail if I do something different), lack of knowledge (we can’t market product over the Internet because I do not know how), and arrogance (I am not going to change simply because I do not feel like it)....
