Essay on Windows 2K Server
Windows 2000 Professional is the upgrade for Windows NT Workstation. Windows 2000 will also be available in 3 types of servers: Server, Advanced Server, and Datacenter Server. Windows 2000 Server is designated as the “Workgroup and Small Business Server”. This is not to be confused with Windows NT Small Business Server, which is still issued on the NT Server 4.0 operating system. A Windows 2000 version of Small Business Server will be forthcoming.
Reasons to Upgrade to Windows 2000:
1. Increased stability: The NT platform has always been the most stable Windows operating system. Microsoft is promoting Windows 2000 as being even more stable and reliable.
2. Fewer Reboots: Compared with Windows NT, there are fewer occasions where reboots are required on Windows 2000. In fact, the reboot scenarios have been reduced.
3. Built-in features: Windows 2000 includes features which were extras or third-party products on Windows NT, for example Terminal Services, disk defragmenter, and resource kit utilities.
4. Improved Recovery: Windows 2000 includes new features for troubleshooting crashes, such as a “Safe mode” boot up and Recovery Console.
5. No choice: At some point, Microsoft will stop selling, supporting, or even issuing service packs for Windows NT.
6. Application compatibility: If you run a third-party client server application, don’t even consider upgrading until the software is certified for Windows 2000.
7. Drivers: Availability of drivers for your legacy adapters and peripherals may be limited....
