Essay on Computer Technology
Technology is undergoing brisk transform, and innovative and enhanced hi-tech advances become visible almost daily. Computer/Technology Skills expertise is not an end in itself, however lays a foundation for lifetime wisdom. These skills turn out to be building blocks with which to meet the challenges of personal and professional life. The important waves of technological change are those that basically modify the place of technology in our lives. What matters is not technology itself, however its affiliation to us. In the past fifty years of computation there have been two great trends in this relationship: the mainframe relationship, and the PC relationship. Today the Internet is carrying us through an era of widespread distributed computing towards the relationship of ubiquitous computing, characterized by deeply imbedding computation in the world. Ubiquitous computing will require a new approach to fitting technology to our lives, an approach we call "calm technology".
The evolution of digital computing is often divided into generations. Each generation is characterized by dramatic improvements over the previous generation in the technology used to build computers, the internal organization of computer systems, and programming languages. Although not usually associated with computer generations, there has been a steady improvement in algorithms, including algorithms used in computational science. The following history has been organized using these widely recognized generations as mileposts.
Computers will extend into more highly developed and they will moreover grow to be easier to use. Enhanced speech recognition will make the operation of a computer easier. Virtual reality, the technology of interacting with a computer using all of the human senses, will also contribute to better human and computer interfaces. Standards for virtual-reality program languages—for example, Virtual Reality Modeling language (VRML)—are currently in use or are being developed for the World Wide Web. Other, exotic models of computation are being developed, including biological computing that uses living organisms, molecular computing that uses molecules with particular properties, and computing that uses deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the basic unit of heredity, to store data and carry out operations....
