Essay on Dell Computers

Michael S. Dell began his career when, as a teenager, he learned to take apart an Apple computer and discovered that he could order the components and assemble a machine for much less than Apple's sale price. In his first year of college at the University of Texas which turned out to be his last year of formal education he figured out that he could make computers to order by adding customized features, and eliminate the middlemen by selling directly to purchasers, many of whom were his friends. He started a business dedicated to finding out what his potential customers wanted in the way of rebuilt, upgraded personal computers, which he then sold to them directly. He did so well that he quit his studies and launched his own company. To mollify his alarmed parents, Dell swore that he would resume his studies if the company bombed. But when sales hit $80,000 the first month, Michael Dell said goodbye to college. (T H E Journal, 1997)....
