Searle a philosopher from University of California at Berkeley gives the idea that no computer programme can function like a mind. This is based on the presumption that the human mind makes logarithms and calculates like the computer does but the computers cannot math the human brain. The computers are seen as machines that cannot think but can perform the complex calculations in short span of time. The machines however cannot think what it is doing, thinking and understanding is meaning less for the computers and machines. The machines and computers cannot respond at their own and only perform the tasks they are programmed.
Searle reviews his famous Chinese room argument in which a man who understands no Chinese can translate between in coming and outgoing messages in Chinese by performing pattern replacements according to rules in a book. It is observed that according to Turing test the person performing the task does not know as to what all is going on. According to Searle the computers are no different and the computer does not know what all it is thinking. Searle also disagrees that simulation of thinking shall not be considered as actual.
The Churchlands agree that Turing test is not sufficient condition for conscious intelligence. They however reject the Searle’s claim that an algorithm cannot be intelligent in principle. The Churchlands argue that the brain is definite, complicated web of neurons each of which performs the definite function governed by physical laws. According to Churchlands the set of mathematical equations relates all the signals appearing in a web; a powerful computer would solve the problem that a brain is not able to solve. The Churchlands believe that the required computing power is achieved within the architectural neural network that imitates the structure of brain. In such systems the intelligence behavior arises microscopically from the collective effects of simple neuron firing....
