Essay on Installing and Implementing a Broadband Router/Hardware Firewall
In packet-switched networks such as the Internet, a router is a device or, in some cases, software in a computer, that determines the next network point to which a packet should be forwarded toward its destination. The router is connected to at least two networks and decides which way to send each information packet based on its current understanding of the state of the networks it is connected to. A router is located at any gateway (where one network meets another), including each point-of-presence on the Internet. A router is often included as part of a network switch.
To install a router first, connect the power adapter to the power connector on the back of your EtherFast Cable/DSL Router.
Using a power strip with surge protection is highly recommended. Check that your Router is successfully powered up by confirming that the Power LED on the Router lights up.
Now, you'll need a network cable to connect the cable or DSL modem to your EtherFast Cable/DSL Router using RJ-45 ports.
Plug one end of the cable into the RJ-45 port of your cable or DSL modem, and the other end into the WAN port on your Router.
Make sure that the modem's power adapter is plugged into a power outlet. Power on your cable or DSL modem.
Check to see that the Router's front panel WAN Link LED is on to confirm a successful connection.
