A computer virus, as defined by the Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, is "a computer program usually hidden within another seemingly innocuous program that produces copies of itself and inserts them into other programs or files, and that usually performs a malicious action (such as destroying data)". A computer virus passes from computer to computer.
There are two broad categories of viruses, macro viruses and worms. However there are many types of viruses that exist but these are especially common these days. Computer viruses are man-made, that is written down by an expert. They are not programs created by way of an error or malfunction of another program. They are almost always especially written down. Once created and released, however, their spreading out is not controlable by humans directly. Computer viruses are software programs designed to interfere with computer operation, record, corrupt, or delete data, or spread use the host computer to spread themselves to other computers and throughout the Internet, they occupy the memory and CPU processing time thus slowing things down and causing other problems in the process.
A virus can only transfer itself from one computer to another if its host is linked to another computer which is uninfected, for instance it can be transferred if a user sends it over a network or carryies it on a removable media. moreover, viruses can be spread by infecting files on a network file system or a file system that is open to acessiblity by another computer. However,viruses are often used in synonym with worms. A worm, however, is an extention of a vius for it can spread itself to other computers without needing to be transferred as part of a host. The issue of virises and worms has become more serious these days because many personal computers are now connected to the Internet and to local-area networks, hence facilitating the spread of computer viruses and worms....
