Essay on Windows XP Home vs. Windows XP Pro

With the introduction of a new consumer targeted version of Windows XP, there has been a lot of confusion about the differences between this product, Windows XP Home Edition, and its more advanced sibling, Windows XP Professional Edition.

Windows XP Home Edition has a number of brand new features and enhancements over Windows 2000 Professional. The major ones are improved software and hardware compatibility, simplified and better security, attractive login screen, fast user switching which means that multiple users can use the system, a brand new user interface, enhanced support for movies, pictures, music, DirectX 8.1 libraries for advanced gaming. (Jim Louderback, 2001).

The most apparent enhancement is security, which is too simplified in the Home Edition. The major features of XP Professional that XP Home Edition lacks are: (1) built in Remote desktop client for accessing other systems over the network remotely. This is very essential for mobile users who need to have frequent access to their systems over the internet. (2) XP Home edition only supports a single processor however XP Professional supports up to 2 processors at a time. (3) Automated System Recovery or ASR is a feature bundled with XP Professional and it is used for recovering from a catastrophic error or a system crash. (4) Like Windows 2000, XP Professional also supports dynamic disks but this feature is lacking in XP Home....
