Essay on Ethical Hacking

Ethical Hacking, a term used to describe a type of hacking that is done to help a company or individual identify potential threats on the computer and/or network. It is often referred to as ‘legalized hacking’ and can even reap a lot of profits for highly skilled individuals (ethical hacking, cyber crime).

An ethical hacker is a computer and network expert who attacks a security system on behalf of its owners, seeking vulnerabilities that a malicious hacker could exploit  (ethical hacker). To test a security system, ethical hackers use the same methods as their less principled counterparts, but report problems instead of taking advantage of them. Hence, ethical hacking is also known as penetration testing, intrusion testing and red teaming (ethical hacker).

In today's world of increasingly interconnected and interdependent networks and computers, concerns about security and privacy have skyrocketed, from credit card theft and hacking to invasions of privacy and other forms of electronic trespassing. Though many tools on the market can help repel these likely attacks, none is as powerful and effective as an ethical hack, which identifies points of vulnerability before the attacker finds them, enabling remediation before the fact, not during or after (Rick Blum). According to Rick Blum, “trying to secure a network without conducting an ethical hack is like trying to determine seaworthiness of a newly designed boat without putting it in the water”. Studying the blueprints alone is never going to be as revealing as an actual voyage. Hence, a security penetration test and/or configuration review helps to identify:

  • The weak links in system security.
  • Where technological change affects the risk profile of business systems.
  • Whether system policing is robust enough.
  • How well security policies are being observed and practiced.

(Andrew Watkins)

A comprehensive ethical hack can also help comply with regulatory mandates, protect against lawsuits, and validate security investments (Rick Blum)....
