Essay on An overview of distributed operating systems
Microsoft Operating Systems:
Although many companies have offered operating systems over the years. Microsoft Corporation has dominated the market for microcomputer operating systems. Microsoft itself has supplied what may seem alphabet soup of operating systems. In practice, however, Microsoft’s have evolved from one to another in a reasonably sequential fashion. The following is a brief summary.
Ms-Dos:
Microsoft’s MS-DOS (which stands for Microsoft Disk Operating System), along with IBM’s PC-DOS (personal Computer Disk Operating System) and competitors like DR DOS (originally from Digital Research and later purchased by Novell), was once the most common of all the PC operating systems. An over whelming volume of software was available that ran under DOS, and a large installed base of Intel-based PCs ran DOS.
Although it ruled throughout the 1980s, Initially DOS did not gain the upper hand without a fight. Its toughest early competitor was an operating system called CP/M, which stood for Control program for Microprocessors. How ever, DOS won the early operating system marketing wars because IBM finally accepted it as the standard operating system for the IBM PC. It therefore became the operating system for the huge market of IBM-compatibles.
DOS was adequate for the IBM-compatible PCs of the early 1980s, but it has certain limitations that became more noticeable as PCs became more powerful. For example:
Under DOS, you can load only a single program into memory at a time. To work with a second program, you have to close the first- a process that often hinders productivity.
DOS was not designed to handle the large amounts of RAM that today’s PCs typically use. As a result you have to use utilities to access memory beyond the 640-KB limit imposed by DOS.
DOS was designed for 8-bit and 16-bit CPUs; it cannot advantage of the 32-bit architecture of the 486, Pentium, and later chips. DOS forces higher-performance computers to work at speeds below their capacity....
