To operate a personal computer (or any larger computer) in the old days, which were not long ago, one had to be a walking dictionary of codes and contorted syntax, to be recalled quickly and accurately and typed in exactly the right order. This of course is the nightmare of the clumsy dyslexic with poor sequencing ability and an unreliable memory. But this has all changed recently. The dyslexic's nightmare has become the dyslexic's dream. And, as a consequence, the ability to give direction to a computer without having to use codes, words, or numbers is beginning to have profound consequences.

Many people hated the early machines and many still hate them-with good reason. But some of those who thought their problem was with the machine have found that the problem was not with the machine itself, but with the things one was forced to do to communicate with the machine. Dealing with the old machines was like driving a car with a typewriter. "Turn 2 degrees to the right. Slow down to 15 mph. Now turn 3.25 degrees to the left." All instructions had to be unnaturally mediated through words and numbers. Everything had to be letter perfect to make it work at all.

One had to pay much more attention to the process of making the machine do the work than to using the machine to do the job. Worst of all, the older machines were just plain dumb (or, one might say, literal-minded). They did not know that we see only a little difference between "s b5" and "sb5." For the old machines these statements were entirely different. One was right and the other was incomprehensible. Consequently, all kinds of things could go wrong because of the smallest errors. The frustration levels could sometimes be quite high even for experienced users. It is not surprising that the early personal computers were often simply left unused....
