Essay on Internet Piracy
In today's society there has been a growing number of internet piracy cases and protection problems. In the U.S. today there have been billions of dollars in losses of stolen software and hacked into systems. The government is trying to create preventative methods today to try and harness the piracy age that has been created (Yardeni, article available on-line).
In today's day and age there is an ever-increasing problem of security on the Internet. Piracy is a very broad topic that includes hacker, viruses, illegal entry and copyright infringements. It also includes on-line theft, which has been the latest trend. In 1996 alone, according to Traphagan and Griffith, software piracy has cost the industry $11.3 billion. They also state that, "Piracy affects everyone--large and small software publishers and legitimate users--and can be committed in a number of ways." Piracy does affect everyone and it costs us all money. (Traphagan and Griffith, Pg 431)
Software is one of the most valuable technologies of the Information Age, running everything from PCs to the Internet. Unfortunately, because software is so valuable, and because computers make it easy to create an exact copy of a program in seconds, software piracy is widespread. From individual computer users to professionals who deal wholesale in stolen software, piracy exists in homes, schools, businesses and government. Software pirates not only steal from the companies that make the software, but with less money for research and development of new software, all users are hurt. That's why all software piracy — even one copy you make for a friend — is illegal. As the number of PCs and Internet use grow, the incidence of software piracy is growing, too.
