Essay on Shell Scripting in Today’s World
Introduction
Over the last few years the scripting programming languages made a significant development. About ten years ago they were viewed as supplementary tools, not really suitable for general programming per se. Now they generate a remarkable amount of interest both in academic circles and in the software industry.
The execution speed and memory consumption of scripting languages vs. the traditional languages presents a historical background of the scripting languages.
History of Shell Scripting
Scripting languages are not new: they have existed since at least the 1960s. However, the power and sophistication of scripting languages have improved dramatically in recent years. When coupled with tremendous increases in computer speed, it has become possible to use scripting languages for a much broader range of applications than was possible previously.
Nearly every major computing platform over the last four decades has supported both system programming languages (for creating applications from scratch) and scripting languages (for integrating components and applications).
What is a Shell?
The boundary between the scripting programming languages and the traditional ones is somewhat blurry. But in short “A shell is a program, which is run every time you log in. It is the program that lets you interact with the machine. It's known as a command interpreter; you give the shell commands, and it runs them. Most users don't even notice the fact that they're running a shell. They just know that a prompt appears and that from there, they can read their mail. This prompt is the shell. It's waiting for you to tell it what to do”.
What is Shell Script?
Shell Script is series of command written in plain text file. Shell script is just like batch file in MS-DOS but have more power than the MS-DOS batch file.
