Essay on Multicultural Education in All College Academic Programs
Multicultural education is a process designed to foster knowledge about and respect for those of all races, ethnic groups, social classes, genders, religions and disabilities. Its purpose is to celebrate diversity as a positive attribute so that equity and justice are ensured for all members of the college and community. Multiculturalism is about inclusion and recognition. It recognizes the rights of all individuals to enjoy their cultural heritage and receive equal treatment and opportunities
The goal of multicultural education is to offer students an equal opportunity to learn and see the possibilities awaiting them in life.
In my opinion there is definitely a need to implement multicultural education in all college academic programs. In this paper I will emphasize on why we should implement multicultural education.
Multicultural education is defined as a one that allows full development of the potential and critical abilities of children regardless of [differences] based on racial, ethnic, gender, and class stratification in society. As the United States moves toward the next century, colleges and classrooms become more culturally and ethnically diverse.
Despite the fact that American education has provided unprecedented educational opportunities, some groups of Americans have benefited from the system more than others. Especially since the 1950s, public policy toward education has sought to provide greater equity—that is, equality of educational opportunity for all Americans.
Policymakers have attempted to eliminate various forms of discrimination in colleges even more than they have addressed issues of educational quality or standards (Banks, 1999). Most federal intervention into the educational practices of local colleges relates to issues of equal educational opportunity.
For education to be appropriate for children of a particular cultural group, the group's culture must be understood because one's education is guided by one's culture, and all aspects of education are cultural..............
